Our Methodology

Transparency about how we handle data.

Where does the data come from?

Our price data comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), which publishes weekly retail gasoline and diesel price averages. The EIA is a federal statistical agency within the Department of Energy.

How often is data updated?

The EIA typically publishes updated price data on Mondays. Our site reflects the most recent weekly release. We do not claim real-time pricing — these are weekly averages.

How are trends calculated?

Trend classifications compare the current week's average price to the prior week's average. A change greater than +$0.10 is labeled 'Rising fast', +$0.03 to +$0.10 is 'Rising', -$0.02 to +$0.02 is 'Stable', and below -$0.02 is 'Cooling'. These are simple directional indicators, not predictions.

What does 'updated' mean?

'Updated' refers to the date we last incorporated the most recent EIA data release. It does not imply real-time pricing or live feeds.

Source attribution

We attribute the data source on every page where price data appears. The source is the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). We encourage users to visit the EIA website directly for raw data, detailed reports, and additional context.
